Provides priority access to emergency services. Users call the relay centre free and are connected to person with whom they wish to speak. Conversation continues in one of several ways: if Typetalk user can speak but not hear they talk directly with their contact, whose reply is typed by the operator appearing as text in the user's textphone. If user is deaf or hard of hearing and speech impaired they type their conversation on the textphone this relays in spoken form to the hearing person through the operator who types a response. If user can hear but is speech impaired they type the conversation on the textphone for relay by operator, but listen directly to the response. Service is free and strictly confidential. Calls are charged at standard BT rates. Use of textphone increases the cost of a call, a rebate scheme is available for some users by dialling a prefix number prior to the telephone number.
