At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Outline their responsibilities under the relevant legislation e.g. MHOR, MHSW, Childrens’ Act, MCA, DDA, LOLER, PUWER and how these responsibilities are tempered by external and internal contributory factors
  • Explain the functions of an ergonomic assessment and its application to moving and handling decisions and care planning
  • Describe the risk factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders and how they may be assessed using ergonomic principles
  • Understand the importance of person-centred planning as applied to moving and handling children with special needs and/or learning disability
  • Appreciate the importance of recording care plans and justifiable actions
  • Describe the principles of human movement and how they may be used to define good practice in handling
  • Describe the principles of human movement and apply this knowledge to physical assessment of the child
  • Understand the importance of using equipment where necessary and relevant
  • Display a competent level in using defined equipment
  • Discuss and develop problem-solving methods of moving and handling children
