AskSARA, DLF's online self assessment tool, shortlisted for the eWell-Being Awards 2008

Logo of eWell-Being Awards 2008The Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) is delighted to announce that its online self assessment service AskSARA has been shortlisted for the finals of SustainIT’s eWell-Being Awards 2008 in the Independent Living category.

AskSARA is an innovative way for older and disabled people and their families to obtain advice about equipment that can help them in their daily lives. AskSARA asks you to enter information about yourself and your environment. It then provides you with a detailed report based on your answers that offers useful advice and suggests products that might be of help to you.

The Awards, supported by BT and Brother, are designed to promote the tangible benefits that ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) can bring to society, the economy and to the environment.

Nicole Penn-Symons, Chief Executive of the DLF says “We are thrilled to have made the finals of the eWell-Being Awards with AskSARA. AskSARA is an innovative service for older and disabled people that offers advice about ways to lead active and independent lives”.

Since their launch in 2002 by SustainIT, an initiative of the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development (UK CEED), the Awards have attracted over 600 high quality entries from a diverse range of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Richard Craven, SustainIT Project Manager, said “ AskSARA  is a simple way for older and disabled people and their families to obtain advice about equipment that can quite literally change peoples lives.”

The winner will be announced at a gala dinner to be held at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on Wednesday 30th April.

The Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) is a national charity that has been the leading provider of impartial advice and information on equipment for older and disabled people for nearly 40 years. DLF’s information is disseminated through a wide range of services:

Healthcare professionals can benefit from DLF Data, the UK’s only comprehensive and up-to-date database of daily living equipment and assistive technology, as well as an extensive Training Programme including a variety of bespoke courses. The DLF also hosts the Moving & Handling People conference, an annual event in 3 parts comprising an exhibition, workshops and plenary sessions.

Members of the public can utilise its Helpline service, which responds to up to 25,000 enquiries a year, or try products out at its Equipment Demonstration Centre in London, one of the largest in the UK.

  • ‘Bathing made easy’, (www.bathingmadeeasy.com), a free comprehensive search and comparison website containing advice and information on bathing and showering products for older and disabled people.

 

The eWell-Being Awards aim to

  • Demonstrate the economic, environmental and social benefits arising from imaginative ICT projects and applications
  • Raise awareness of such projects amongst opinion-formers, decision-makers and the general public
  • Encourage replication and development of innovative ICT projects and technologies that tackle social and/or environmental challenges

SustainIT is an initiative of the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development (UK CEED), a leading sustainable development charity. The initiative aims to maximise the environmental and social benefits of ICT through innovative research, project demonstration, and the identification and dissemination of best practice.

SustainIT works in a variety of areas including:
