Trainer profiles
Pat Alexander is a freelance Back Care Advisor and Trainer. She initially worked with children under Dr Bobath before becoming a Manual Handling Advisor for the NHS. She is a member of the National Back Exchange, an Expert Witness and has contributed to a number of publications.
Jennifer Beaumont is a senior Occupational Therapist who worked on a National basis for a private company developing telecare solutions. She was a member of the Dept of Health Telecare Collaborative and has a special interest in electronic assistive technology. Currently she works for Trafford PCT leading on telecare,working in partnership with social care and housing to promote the assessment and delivery of telecare solutions which involves a practical and problem solving approach to service users needs.
Dipak Chauhan started his career as a state registered nurse and is now a qualified ergonomist with extensive experience in a variety of sectors including the NHS, charities and large multinationals.
Sue Clements is Head of Advice Services at the DLF and has been involved with Trusted Assessor Training since 2003.
Fiona Collins is an occupational therapist with 20 years of experience in preventing the development of pressure ulcers and management of posture in seated people. She has run a Wheelchair Service, worked in industry and in education. Since 1999, Fiona has co-run TVCS Ltd, a multi-disciplinary consultancy providing tissue viability services both to the private sector, the NHS and industry. Fiona also undertakes expert witness work for the courts, coroner’s and disciplinary hearings. She has written over 50 journal articles, a number of educational booklets and co-authored two books, the A – Z Dictionary of Wound Care Terms and a Comprehensive Guide to Tissue Viability.
Mike Fray is the director of Handling Movement and Ergonomics Ltd; a company specialising in manual handling training and advice to health, social care and educational establishments. He has over ten years experience in the manual handling field and has contributed to a number of research papers and publications. He is also the course tutor for the Postgraduate programme in Back Care Management at Loughborough University.
Richard Handley is Co-founder of Care and Independence, which has supplied slings, hoists and related products since 2001. He is a member of the National Back Exchange and represents the UK on the European Standards committee for Hoists and Slings.

Jan Hillman is a Senior Therapy Adviser at the DLF. She has extensive experience as a Community Occupational Therapist and has developed and delivered Trusted Assessor Training since 2003.
Danielle Holmes is a nurse and an ergonomist and a leader in the field of implementation of safe handling practices. She is an Expert Witness and provides training and consultancy in all aspects of safe handling.
Philippa Leggett has been active in the area of manual handling since 1992 and is a freelance manual handling consultant and ergonomist with a physiotherapeutic background, working with care providers, industry and service provision contractors across the UK. A national/international conference speaker, visiting university lecturer and co-author of both the 4th edition ”Guide to the Handling of Patients” and 5th edition “Guide to the Handling of People”, those who have attended her seminars on human movement will be aware of her overriding belief that the answer to many manual handling problems does not lie in the mathematics but in understanding the psychology of human interaction. At present she is studying for a PhD in health ergonomics at Robens Institute, University of Surrey.
Michael Mandelstam is a freelance specialist and author. He provides training and advice on legal aspects of health and social care. Prior to this he worked in the voluntary sector and at the Department of Health.
Viccie Nelson is a physiotherapist who has worked in Adult rehabilitation, occupational health and schools as both practitioner and service manager. She has been a manual handling advisor for ten years and is a freelance trainer. She is a Member of the National Back Exchange.
Anita Rush is a clinical nurse specialist in equipment provision and a health ergonomist with a wealth of experience. She is an expert in bariatric moving and handling practices as well as bariatric equipment design and provision. Her article 'An Overview of Bariatric Management' is now available.
Lise Satherley is an HPC Registered Occupational Therapist and active member of COTSS WORK. Lise has had an interest in Vocational Rehabilitation for many years and been involved in assisting people back to work for the last 7 years. For the last two years she has worked as a private practitioner. Lise has specific expertise in equipment and ergonomic solutions for workplaces to assist in job retention and return to work and has many years of experience of working with Access to Work teams. Lise is experienced in identifying barriers caused by impaired function, perception of disability (either by the person themselves or the employer) and the environment. Her approach is practical and she is not adverse in finding solutions that are 'outside the box' when overcoming barriers caused by disability. She will be pulling together theory associated with ergonomics, disability and vocational rehabilitation, practical demonstrations with workplace equipment and sharing experiences from cases she has been involved in over the years.
Trish Sweeney is a qualified Occupational Therapist with over 20 years experience. She is currently an Access Officer in Islington, London as well as an independent Occupational Therapist Access Consultant and Trainer.
Adam Thomas has been designing kitchens for 26 years. With over 300 accessible designs to his name, Adam is the UK's leading accessible kitchen designer. A wheelchair user since 1981, Adam received a prestigious award in 2006 from the kitchen industry's trade association.
Simon Wells is a Manual Handling Advisor working in the acute and community environment. With over ten years experience in manual handling, he is a member of National Back Exchange and holds a Masters degree in Hospital Management.
