National voluntary organisation concerned with the needs of people with complex communication needs. Can provide information and support with augmentative and alternative communication systems. Members include people who use augmentative and alternative communication and their family and enablers, as well as people from all disciplines that work with people who have complex communication needs. It is the UK branch of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC). Currently encouraging and supporting the establishment of augmentative and alternative communication user groups for both adults and children. -

Conquest Art - Enriching the Lives of Physically Disabled People

Contact a Family
Links with a network of more than 1,000 self help and mutual support groups for families caring for children with special needs and disabilities. Local groups usually cover a range of special needs, but more than 400 are run nationally for families where children have a specific, sometimes rare disorder. Offers support and training to parents involved in running these groups both locally and nationally. The information and advice service links families together and encourages mutual support between parents. Contact the Elderly
Aims to relieve the loneliness and isolation of elderly people living alone with limited support from family, friends and statutory services and to bring companionship into their lives. Local groups organise monthly group outings into 'hostesses' homes. There are approximately 230 groups nationwide. -
Continence Foundation
Provide information and advice to the general public and those professionally concerned with continence issues. Raises awareness and campaigns for continence products to be given higher priority in healthcare. Country Cousins aim to offer flexible, live-in caring assignments with Clients in all parts of the UK. Country Cousins use their own life-skills to support elderly people who would otherwise be forced to move from a well loved home. -

Publications include: 'Sense and Accessibility', a book on how to improve access to the outdoor environment including country paths, parks and trails for disabled people; 'Informal Countryside recreation for Disabled People' a design manual on disability provision with reference to countryside recreation. -
Crafts Council
Compiles a national register of makers and runs an information service providing details on training, exhibitions and business practice. -
Cricket Federation for People with Disabilities
Promote league and international cricket for disabled people. Aims to create a structured plan for disabled cricketers to participate in International and World Cup matches. Organise tournaments in different parts of the United Kingdom and also overseas. Advises how standard proven coaching methods can be applied to coaching disabled people. -
Crimestoppers Trust
Crimestoppers was initially introduced in the UK in January 1988. Following many months of research and fact-finding it became the first force-wide scheme. In the meantime the charity, Community Action Trust, had already been set up by several businessmen, led by Lord Michael Ashcroft. Crimestoppers was the scheme adopted by the charity and a few businesses subscribed funds to get the project started. Lord Ashcroft has maitained his support for Crimestoppers Trust and is chairman of the trustees. The name was changed in June 1995. -

Cruse - Bereavement Care
Offers personal and confidential help to all bereaved people and those who care for them; information on financial, practical and bereavement issues; support groups; publications; national and local training for bereavement counsellors and organisations. -
Cue and Review Recording Services
Aims to provide visually impaired people with a comparable range of magazines to that available in print for sighted young people. People unable to read magazines due to other physical disabilities may also be eligible for this service on payment of postage. They also help organisations meet their responsibilities. Applications should be made through local Social Services Department. -
Cued Speech Association UK
Promotes Cued Speech, the communication tool for hearing impaired people based on sounds of speech. Runs courses for individuals, teachers and other interested parties. Also assists hearing people who have speech and language difficulties. Liases with international organisations concerned with Cued Speech. -
Cyclemagic
Promote access to cycling for all people regardless of age, ability, race, gender and circumstance. Increase participation in cycling for both leisure and transport so as to benefit people's health, environment and community. Promote all forms of human powered vehicle - land, sea, and air. Projects include bike recycling, special needs cycles for hire, bike ride teaching. -
Cycling for All (Croydon LCC)
South London project to encourage and enable cycling for people with disabilities and special needs, using adapted and unadapted tricycles. -
Cystic Fibrosis Trust
Support children and adults with Cystic Fibrosis and their families. Improve current methods of treatment and help promote early diagnosis in children. Activities include: medical research; raising public awareness; providing information support and advice; fundraising; campaigning; financial support; respite care.
