I-CAN
Aims to create a society where the special needs of children with speech and language impairments are recognised, understood and met, allowing them the same opportunities in life as other children. Run two specialist schools, four language resource centres, and a national professional development programme offering courses to professionals including speech and language therapists and teachers. -
Ileostomy and Internal Pouch Support Group
Aims to help anyone whose colon has been, or is about to be removed by surgical procedure or who has an ileostomy. Promote and co-ordinate research into bowel disease and other conditions leading to the removal of the colon, surgical procedures pertaining thereto, and related matters to promote the dissemination of knowledge gained by such research. Aims to keep ileostomists and others informed of all matters of interest to the group by arranging conferences, seminars, and courses. -

Imperial Cancer Research Fund
Carries out research into the causes, prevention, treatment and cure of cancer. -
Impotence Association
Provide support and information to people with issues around impotence, and their partners. Inform and educate the general public and health professionals of the causes and treatments available for impotence. The Association also addresses the problem of female sexual dysfunction. -
Inclusion Scotland
The organisation is campaigning and researching access and freedom of mobility for people with disability in Scotland. -
Inclusive Fitness Initiative
Support local authority fitness provision in England to offer an inclusive service for both disabled and non disabled people. The project supports facilities through four key elements equipment, training, marketing and sports development. -
Incontact
Provide support to people affected by bladder and bowel problems through a network of groups and information to educate and raise awareness on incontinence issues. Run a telephone helpline service. -

Independent Living Alternatives
An independent living scheme providing full-time personal assistants to disabled people who want to continue living in their own homes. Provide support and information to people who wish to recruit and employ their own personal assistant; an information service on issues relating to independent living and personal assistance. Also runs a forum called the Independent Living Forum (FloydP!) operating in the London area that aims to provide an opportunity for younger disabled people to explore independent lifestyles, with freedom of choice. -
Independent Living Funds
National resource dedicated to the financial support of disabled people to enable them to choose to live in the community rather than in residential care. The funds are constituted as publicly financed discretionary trusts. For both funds, awards are in the form of regular four-weekly payments to individuals, which are used to buy personal care in the community. Recipients may use care agencies or employ personal assistants, but may not employ relatives who live in the same house. In the case of the Extension Fund, the aim has been to continue paying awards to people who were clients of the original ILF, which was closed to new applicants at the end of March 1993 when new community care funding arrangements were implemented. The 93 Fund was set up at that time to accept new applications from people who need more help than their local authority was able to provide. -

Information for Mental Health
Information for Mental Health is a partnership between Leeds Mind and Leeds Social Services. Provide resources and information that aim to help people make informed choices about their lives and mental health, and to help professionals and carers supporting them to do so more imaginatively and effectively. Also carry out a range of mental health promotion work. Website includes video clips of information in British Sign Language. -

Patient-led charity for people with insulin dependent diabetes. Exert pressure on manufacturers to ensure that animal insulin is available for those dependents who have problems with human insulin. -
Intellect
Organisation incorporating the British Radio and Electronic Equipment Manufacturers (BREME) representing them and the technology, telecommunications and electronic industries in the United Kingdom. Trade association which can provide current information on commercially available hi-fi, television and radio equipment. They may be able to research equipment with particular design features. Work with the DTI on equipment for use with special needs and inclusive design. -
International Autistic Research Organisation
Encourages research into the mental and emotional condition of autism and other associated conditions. Disseminate the useful results of such research. -
International Glaucoma Association
Provide a fellowship to those suffering from the eye disease glaucoma and those concerned in its diagnosis and treatment; to press for increased resources for what is frequently a neglected condition so that there is an improved awareness and better long term monitoring of the disease. -
International Myeloma Foundation UK
Informs and supports people affected by myeloma, and helps improve treatment and standards of care through research and education. Services include provision of information packs and factsheets, educational patient/family seminars, a quarterly newsletter, several patient support groups, and a telephone helpline which offers information, practical advice and support. -
International Tennis Federation (Weelchair Tennis)
Provide, promote and develop opportunities for men, women, and children with disabilities to participate in recreational and competitive wheelchair tennis at all levels from novice to the professional player. Ensures that fair and equal opportunity is provided for all those entitled to play under its eligibility rules and that the rules of wheelchair tennis are implemented according to the standards expected of an international body. -

Iris Fund for Prevention of Blindness
Aims to mobilise, encourage, foster and maintain the interest of the public in the work of research into the prevention and cure of blindness and to provide funds in aid of such research. -

IT Can Help Network
Project of the British Computer Society Disability Group. Network of volunteers who are experienced computer users, and who provide free computer support to disabled people in their own home. ITCH Network covers over 40 counties in the UK. All volunteers carrying out home visits are fully vetted, before they are taken on the scheme. -

A network of volunteers who provide free local computer assistance to disabled people. Part of the British Computer Society Disability Group. -
ITP Support Association
Aims to promote the general welfare of patients or families of children with ITP. Collates information, working with the medical profession in order to advance the knowledge and treatment of ITP. Promote research into ITP. Activities include providing information and advice, collating and disseminating information, telephone contact network/ perpal/ e-pal network, annual convention and fundraising for the Stan Byrett Memorial Research Fund and other projects to benefit the ITP Sufferers. The organisation produces a newsletter and fact sheets. -
Iyengar Yoga Institute
Aims to advance public education in the classic teachings of the science of Yoga. Promote the study and practice of Yoga for public benefit. Supports research into the therapeutic effects of Yoga as a means of improving the mental and physical health of the community. Publish the results of such research.
