'Harry Potter' star Miriam Margolyes visits DLF’s Equipment Demonstration Centre

9th March 2010
Award-winning actress Miriam Margolyes visited the offices of national charity the Disabled Living Foundation (DLF) last week to find out a bit more about its services and discover what gadgets and gizmos exist to help older and disabled people in their daily lives. The actress had first become aware of DLF's work when carrying out their 40th Anniversary Radio 4 Appeal last October.
One of DLF’s occupational therapists showed Miriam around the centre, which is the largest of its type in the South East. The tour started by looking at a number of smaller gadgets that can help with daily tasks in the kitchen, such as opening jars, before moving onto a demonstration of a number of the larger pieces of equipment such as stairlifts and specially adapted beds.
Miriam commented: “It’s amazing to see how much equipment actually exists to help people. There are lots of things in the centre that I think people would find really useful as they grow older. There were a few things I had seen before but many were new to me.”
Miriam continued: “I think it is a great resource for local residents who can receive free and impartial advice from qualified professionals on what equipment is right for them, without any sales pressure. I was very impressed by the knowledge of the occupational therapist who showed me round and would encourage anyone who lives in London and is having difficulties with some of their normal activities to make an appointment to visit.”
Christine Shaw, DLF’s Chief Executive, commented: “We are delighted that Miriam found time in her busy schedule to visit our centre. She really sees the value of the work we do and we look forward to working more closely with her in the future.”
The Equipment Demonstration Centre, which has hundreds of items on display, is divided up into a number of different areas including a kitchen and bathing area, garden section, dedicated telecare flat and a specialist children’s section.
