Recognising the role of informal carers - a new DLF initiative

As a society, we are slowly recognising the vital role that informal carers play in society.

In the week that NHS Digital released figures that show a decline in support by local authorities Carers UK’s Chief Executive commented “Appallingly, this is the fifth consecutive year we’ve seen fewer carers in England supported by their local authority, with 22% fewer supported or assessed this year compared to 5 years ago.’’ To view the full article click here

In a bold move, our lovely bunch of DLF freelance trainers decided to recognise DLF’s 50-year heritage by donating their time to creating a course that could be provided at very low cost to carers in their communities. Working jointly with commissioners we hope to stage half-day events in easily accessible venues so that time-poor carers can benefit from training designed to reduce the risks to themselves and their loved ones. Moving and Handling People: Induction for Informal Carers is a half-day practical course designed to teach hands-on skills for immediate daily use in lifting and moving the cared one.

Moving and handling is a daily activity that incorrectly done carries risks for both. The benefit of the training lies in reducing the risk of this regular activity that often represents one of the trickiest parts of the day.
DLF is keen to talk to organisations working with carers whether public, private or third sector in locations around the UK who would like to explore the possibility of providing courses close to people’s homes whether at libraries, hubs, social venues or any suitable venue.

Carers should also not forget DLF’s online information resources for daily living: Living Made Easy can reduce risk and cost caused by purchasing unsuitable equipment and by providing impartial, expert advice on product types and a range of potential suppliers. The website provides details of over 10,000 products from over 950 suppliers covering everything from small items, that make a world of difference like grab rails and walkers, to more substantial technology like stair lifts and telecare monitoring systems. Take a look at www.livingmadeeasy.org.uk to view our information about a range of products and their suppliers.
